WALTER  NERSTAD
May 11, 1914 - November 1, 2007

Walter was born May 11, 1914 in Riceford, Minnesota to John and Liva
(Johnson) Nerstad.  His mother died when he was two years old and he was raised by his two aunts and uncle, Hannah, Bertha, and Christ.  He attended the Tawney School.  On March 1, 1941 he married Benita Jacobson in Lanesboro, Minnesota.  She later passed away on March 18, 1980.  He farmed in Preble Township, Fillmore County until moving into Mabel in 1980.  He was a resident at Heritage Grove in Harmony for two years before moving to the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel in 2005. Walter was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church of Mabel and the Sons of Norway, and had served on the Preble Township Board for several years and in different capacities within the Scheie Church. Walter enjoyed fishing, dancing, golfing, traveling, and playing in the dartball league.

Walter passed away   Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Gunderson Lutheran
Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin at the age of 93.

Walter is survived by a daughter Carolyn  (Lloyd) Heim of Oronoco; a son Alvin (Tamie) of Mabel; four grandchildren Amy, Kari, David, and Alicia; great grandchildren Reece and Brandon; and special friend and companion Edith Nerstad of Spring Grove.  He was preceded in death by two children Llewellyn who died in 1961 and Warren who died in 1950; five brothers Olean, James, Levi, Edwin, and Eugene; and a sister Clara.

Funeral services will be 11 AM  Monday, November 5, 2007 at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Burial will be in the Scheie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 6 PM Sunday, November 4 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
