Roger J. Holland

January 27, 1938 - July 3, 2024

Roger James Holland, 86, of Spring Grove, beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, uncle, and great-uncle. Roger was born on January 27, 1938, and died July 3, 2024, at his home.

Roger grew up in Newburg Township of Fillmore County, Minnesota, one of the nine children of James and Palma (Myhre) Holland. He attended the Newburg School and Mabel High School. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. During his first marriage to Lois Solberg, two children, Troy and Kelly, were born to them. In 1974, Roger married Marcia (Ostern) Sires. They lived their 50 years together in Spring Grove and had two children, Jeramie and Sarah.

Roger was reserved, stoic and quiet. He was also humble, although this quality was balanced by a reserved air of self-assurance when he was fixing or creating something. It was always fun to have him supervising a project you were working on, him saying nothing about the progress, then explaining how he would have done it after you were finished. He took pleasure spending time with his many siblings, and nieces and nephews. Despite his quiet demeanor, Roger had a sense of humor, often goofy, sometimes sarcastic.

Like so many people of his generation, Roger possessed a work ethic that was at the core of his being, which gave his life a sense of purpose well into his old age. His first job was farming with his family. Following his military service, Roger worked at several places including Crenlo, 7-Up, and Donaldson’s in Rochester, and Northwest Tie of Webster Industries in Spring Grove. Roger’s favorite job was doing carpentry work with his brother, Dean.

Roger enjoyed taking care of his home and his family. He was particularly passionate about mowing his lawn. Whether it was home improvement, carpentry, woodworking projects, or furniture building with Sarah and refinishing with Marcia to be done, Roger was always available to help. He built numerous sets and props for Ye Olde Opera House as his daughter Sarah voluntold him to.

One of his favorite activities was playing cards. Rap Poker and Euchre brought out an unexpected competitive streak. Another thing Roger enjoyed was spending time on the porch with family, puzzles, cheering on and grumbling about the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. After a Packers Super Bowl win, he and Jeramie gave a drive-by booing to his Packer fan son-in-law.

Anyone who knew him would tell you how much he loved going for walks and pick-up rides with their beloved dog Sadie.

Roger is survived by his wife Marcia of Spring Grove; children Troy of Mabel, Jeramie of Spring Grove, and Sarah (Mark) Schroeder of Spring Grove; son-in-law Tom Swee of Eyota; grandsons Josh Raaen, Coleton and Brayden Swee; siblings Jerald, Patty (Robert) Tollefsrud, Darlene Hanson, Beverly Kallis, Richard (Lorretta), Gary (Harriet); sister-in-law Terry Holland; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Kelly, brothers Dean and David; and several nieces and nephews. Roger will be dearly missed and remembered by his family and friends.

Memorial service will be 1 PM, Wednesday, July 10th at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.  Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
