Kathryn (Kathy) Anne Newman, 73, of Mabel passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023 comfortably in her home after suffering a severe stroke. She was surrounded by family and her beloved cats when she passed. There will be a memorial service a later date to celebrate her life.
Kathy Newman was born August 30, 1949 to Alfred and Ida (Peterson) Rollie in Stewartville, MN. She attended and graduated from Plainview High School in 1967. She met and married the love of her life Lee Charles Newman in 1967.
After working various jobs, she moved in 1972 with Lee to Idaho where he started his lifelong career of siding houses. After four years she moved back to Minnesota with her family to Altura before purchasing and settling at the old Tor Velde place north of Mabel, MN in 1981. Over the years she worked in jobs that varied from farrowing sows, building canoes, knitting sweaters and working on assembly lines. In addition to her tirelessly raising her six children and working a full-time job she was able to graduate from college as a graphic designer. She used her degree to design decals for the space shuttle and later designed sports logos for Winona U.S.A. screen printing and embroidery department.
Kathy was talented and artistic in so many ways. She was a gifted sewer, sewing everything from wedding gowns, formal dresses and tuxedos for her children to costumes and banners for her grandchildren. She was also a great cook who could be counted on cooking as if there was a family of 8 still at the table, most often without recipes! She created, baked and decorated cakes for family and friends. Kathy’s green thumb was put to good use raising plants and produce to sell at various farmers markets with her husband Lee, and helping out on her daughter and son in-law’s (Mari and Kyle Holthaus) farm, Kymar Acres. Not only did she love her cats, she also loved working with livestock but most of all horses; driving teams was one of her favorite activities. Kathy was a rare woman of many talents and will be greatly missed.
Kathy Newman is survived by her six children: Charles (Karyn) Newman, Dallas, GA; William Newman, Rochester, MN; Mari (Kyle) Holthaus, Waukon, IA; Timothy Newman, Mabel, MN; Honey (Steve) Chappell, Suwanee, GA; Anna (Tim) Herzmann, Monona, IA; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and her brother-in-law, Robert Peterson, Plainview MN.
She is proceeded in death by her husband Lee Newman, parents Alfred and Ida Rollie, sister Karen Peterson, and brothers John and Fred Rollie.
