R. Sylvia Wennes

December 1, 1929 - August 20, 2022

Rosalind Sylvia Wirth, the daughter of Peter and Selma (Engan) Wirth was born December 1, 1929 in Hesper, Iowa.  She was baptized and confirmed at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church.  She attended rural schools in Winneshiek and Allamakee Counties.  She graduated from the Mabel High School.

On September 28, 1947 she married Curtis E. Wennes at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, Iowa.  They lived on the farm west of Hesper all their married life. 

She was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church.  She belonged to the women’s organization and held several offices, served on the Church Council, taught Sunday School for many years, and was Sunday School Superintendent.
She and Curtis loved having ponies and took part in many Midwest parades.  They spent winters in Gilbert, Arizona where they also drove the ponies in parades.  She loved being outdoors.

Sylvia died peacefully at Green Lea Senior Living in Mabel on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at the age of 92.

Sylvia is survived by a daughter Connie (Jag) Amdahl of Fountain Hills, Arizona; sons Randy (Julie) Wennes of Cresco, Iowa, and Tony Wennes (Charlene Selbee) of Hesper, Iowa; grandchildren Tracy (Craig) Kruse, Tim (Erica) Wennes, Anita (Jim) Elco, Terri (Casey) Huish, Sarah Wennes, Kristen (Andrew) Mashek, Josh (Sarah) Wennes, and Taylor (Shea)  McNamara;  15 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; a brother Bob (Carolyn) Metcalf; and half-sister Linda Curry.

She was preceded in death by a her husband; a son Gary Wennes, a grandson Curt Wennes; sister Harriet Vellikson and brother-in-law Oren Vellikson; brother Jr. Wirth and sister-in-law Berthana Wirth; her parents; and step-father Harry Metcalf.

Funeral service will be 11 AM, Saturday, August 27, 2022 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa. Burial will be in the church Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
