LAVAUGHN M. VITSE

August 31, 1944 - March 17, 2020

LaVaughn was born August 31st, 1944 in Newburg Township, MN to LaVerne and Mildred Johnson.  A short time later, the family moved to a farm near Tawney, MN where she attended the country school that was taught by her grandmother and she graduated from Mabel High School in 1962.  She moved to Rochester, MN to become a hair stylist and while working there she met her first husband, Robert Johnson, and they had a son, Todd.  When Todd was 3 years old Robert and Todd both drowned in a tragic accident. Following the accident, she moved back to the family farm to be with her parents.

In 1973, she married Paul D. Vitse settling in Mabel after the wedding. LaVaughn enjoyed travelling throughout the United States, especially Northern Minnesota, to visit her friends and to go fishing with Paul. In addition, she enjoyed her church life at Scheie Church and she really enjoyed singing in the choir.  She liked to look nice as her shoes, hair and nails always had to match. LaVaughn was well liked and was a friend to everyone she met.

LaVaughn  died peacefully on March 16th, 2020 at Gundersen-Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wisconsin at the age of 75.

LaVaughn is survived by her husband Paul of 47 years, a brother James (Barbara) Johnson of Eau Claire, WI, four aunts and many nieces and nephews.  She loved her nieces and nephews with her whole heart.  LaVaughn will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

LaVaughn was preceded in death by her first husband Robert; her son, Todd; and her parents LuVerne and Mildred.

Due to the current Corona Virus situation, visitation for LaVaughn’s family and close friends only will be 12:30 -1:30 pm, Thursday, March 26 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel.  Graveside services will be 2pm at the Scheie Lutheran Cemetery.
