LAVAUGHN MARJORIE TURNER
November 6, 1925 - January 10, 2015

LaVaughn was born November 6, 1925 in Fillmore County to Hjalmer and Sidna Amdahl Sand and lived on the Luther Kingstad farm north of Mabel.  She was a member of Scheie Lutheran Church and attended Tawney school through 8th grade.  She graduated from Mabel High School in 1943 as salutatorian of her class.  LaVaughn attended College of Commerce in Minneapolis and after graduating worked as a medical secretary to Dr. L. H. Winer in the Medical Arts Building in Minneapolis. LaVaughn returned to Mabel in 1945 and began working at First State Bank of Mabel.

LaVaughn was united in marriage to Lyle Rolfshus in 1948. They were later divorced.  In 1957 she went to work at Onsgard State Bank in Spring Grove and in 1962 she returned to First National Bank in Mabel, retiring in 1989.

LaVaughn was a member of Mabel First Lutheran Church and served as Sunday school teacher, elementary Sunday school superintendent, and was on the church council.  In 1970 LaVaughn married Kenneth Turner.  They resided in Canton.  Upon moving to Canton, she joined the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church.  Kenneth passed away in 1990.

LaVaughn had many artistic interests.  She loved sewing, painting, furniture refinishing, and gardening.  Her Norwegian heritage shown through in Rosemaling painting.  While singing and touring with the Sweet Adelines, she made many long-time friends.  After retiring she took up designing and making jewelry as well as constructing frames and framing many prints she had collected over the years.

LaVaughn passed away Saturday, January 10 at Fairview Care Center in Dodge Center, where she had resided the past seven years, at the age of 89.

Survivors include her children Lisa (Robert) Kelly, Dodge Center, MN and Leigh (Doris) Rolfshus, Minneapolis, MN.  Three step-children also survive: Kathryn (Al) McMillen, Escondido, CA, Bradley (Ellyn) Turner, Winona, MN and Jeanne (Tim) Breitsprecher, Mabel, MN.   She is survived by 5 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren as well as several great- grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Harold (Elaine) Sand, Mabel, MN.  Her husband Kenneth, her parents, one sister, and two brothers preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2015 at Canton Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, January 15 at Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, Minnesota and one hour prior to services at the church. 

Memorials are suggested to Fairview Care Center or Canton Presbyterian Church.

The family is grateful to the entire staff at Fairview Care Center for the excellent care and love they provided LaVaughn the past seven years.
