Arlis was born December 27, 1923 in the “Big Woods” of Fillmore County to Henry and Ida Vickerman. He was baptized and confirmed at the Newburg United Methodist Church. He attended country schools in the area and helped his father on the farm and sawmill. He served in the United States Army on a hospital ship during World War II. After his service in the Army, he married Marion Strand. They lived in Brooklyn, New York and Connecticut where he worked in construction and in custodial work. They later moved back to Fillmore County and lived in Rushford, Harmony, and then to Green Lea Manor in Mabel. Marion later passed away. He had a good sense of humor and was good with “one-liners”. He enjoyed doing yard work and gardening.
Arlis passed away Sunday, December 14, at Green Lea Senior Living in Mabel at the age of 90.
Arlis is survived by a sister Irma (James) Wangenof Lanesboro, and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion, his parents, four brothers, and six sisters.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel. Burial will be in the Big Springs Cemetery in Harmony. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
