WENDELL GAYLORD PETERSON

December 10, 1932 - September 24, 2014

Wendell was born December 10, 1932 in Newburg Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota to Walter and Gladys (Halverson) Peterson.  He graduated from the Mabel High School.  He worked on the farm with his father and then joined the United States Army and was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas.  He returned to the farm and on September 24, 1976 was united in marriage to Lucille Melcher.  They continued to farm until 1985 when they moved into Mabel where he worked at the feed mill and later managed the apartments at Cherrywood Estates.  He was a lifelong member of the Garness Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Mabel and enjoyed activities with his grandchildren, watching the Packers and Twins, keeping up with world events, bowling, and old tractors.

Wendell passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Mayo Health Systems –St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of 81.
Wendell is survived by his wife Lucille of Mabel; a daughter Joan Farrington; grandchildren Dane (Jessi) Saxon, Naomi (Max) Stockert, Brandon (Alysha) Wilbanks, and Nicole (Anthony) Wilbanks; seven great grandchildren Devlin Saxon, Isaiah, Xavier, and Alexis Stockert, and Harmoni, Gabriel, and Josie Wilbanks;  five sisters Mavis Johnsrud of Spring Grove, Minnesota, Jan McDonough of Rochester, Barbara Peterson of Rochester, Beverly (Kenneth) Schivone of Shoreview, Minnesota, and Audrey (David) Insoft of Pound Ridge, New York; numerous niece and  nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Roger Peterson; a sister Joyce Johnson; and brothers-in-law Orvin Johnsrud and Dennis McDonough.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Monday, September 29th 2014 at the Garness Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.  Visitation will be 4 – 8 PM Sunday, September 28th at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
