HANLON D. "PRESS" PRESTBY

March 26, 1929 - October 11, 2013

Hanlon D, “Press” Prestby, 84, of Canton, died Friday, October 11, 2013 at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, MN.

Hanlon was born March 26, 1929 to Hans and Marion (Oseth) Prestby, in Deer Park, WI. He moved at the age of 1 to a farm near Thief Rivers Falls, MN, and attended St. Hilaire Grade School and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. He went to work for Danielson Electric for 3 years prior to joining the U. S. Air Force from 1950-1954. He served 39 months at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City SD, where he met his wife, Carolyn Snyder in Rapid City. They were married August 15, 1953. After being discharged, the couple moved to Canton, MN, and operated Press Highway Shell Station from 1954 – 1971. He worked for Canton Lumber Company and bartended  for many years at the Skyline Supper Club in Spring Grove, MN. After retirement, he worked as a green’s keeper at Harmony Golf Course.

Press was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, a retired Canton Fireman and also served on the Canton City Council and belonged to the Canton American Legion Post #400.

He is survived by his 3 children, Nick (Rene), Kim (Jerry) Bakke, and Marc, all of Canton; 6 grandchildren, Kristi (Peter) Elsbernd, Lucas (Jessica) Wangen, Michele Wangen, and Nicole, Samantha, and Rachael Prestby; 6 great grandchildren, Ashley, Kendra, Addison and Blake Elsbernd, Carson Wangen and Liam Prestby; one sister, Eileen Johnson of Broomfield, CO; and  brothers and sisters in law, Pat Caldwell, Cy and Mary Snyder, and Georgia Lee; and many nieces and nephews and cousins that he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Carolyn; brother in laws, Stan Lee and Bruce Johnson, and a sister in law, Mary Caldwell.

A Funeral Mass will be at 11 am on Tuesday, October 15, at Assumption Catholic Church in Canton with Msgr. Paul Heiting and Msgr. Donald P. Schmitz officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Monday at the church with a rosary at 7:30 pm. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Mengis Funeral Home, Mabel,is assisting the family with arrangements.
