Maxine was born August 27, 1918 in Lenora, Minnesota to Eugene and Hazel
(Erickson) Lewis.  She was baptized at the North Prairie Lutheran Church and confirmed at the Henrytown Lutheran Church.  She attended the Lenora School and graduated from the Canton High School in 1936.  Maxine attended Normal Teachers School in Preston and then graduated from the Winona State College in 1962 after several night and summer classes.  On December 27, 1941 she married Robert "Bud" Gilbert at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in rural Canton.  Bud passed away May 18, 2008.She taught in several Fillmore County country schools and then for 27 years in the Mabel-Canton School District.
She was an active member of the Henrytown Lutheran Church and also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Maxine passed away Friday, May 27, 2011 at Valley View Healthcare and Rehab in Houston, Minnesota at the age of 92.

Maxine is survived by a daughter Sharon (Jerry) Knudsen of Houston, Minnesota; two grandchildren Karen Knudsen and her children Lauren and Joshua of Burnsville, Minn. and Ross (Julie) Knudsen and their children Molly, Dale, and Drew Robert of Houston; and a sister-in-law Shirley
(Lowell) Johnson of Waseca; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Bud and her parents.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the Henrytown Lutheran Church in Canton with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 7 PM Wednesday, June 1 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
