Herbert was born in Mabel on November 27, 1928 to Wilhelm and Alma (Karlsbraten) Wiger. He grew up on a farm and attended the Mabel High School where he graduated in 1947. On September 4, 1949 he married Betty J. Johnson. They had two children Clark and Jolyn. Herbert and Betty were in business in Mabel for 15 years with a restaurant and grocery store. He was a salesman before managing the Mabel Liquor Store until his retirement. He was a member of the Mabel Fire Department for 35 years and was the secretary for 33 years. He served four years on the city council, and drove school bus for 32 years for the Mabel-Canton Schools.
Funeral services will be 2 PM Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with the Rev. Gail Klavetter officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Herbert passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa at the age of 82.
Herbert is survived by his wife Betty of Mabel; two children Clark (Liz) of Decorah, and Jolyn (Mark) Amunrud of Lacrescent, Minnesota; three grandchildren Elissa (Aric) Yaw, Amanda Wiger, and Sam Amunrud; and a great grandson Brayden. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother William.
