LEONARD EDWIN BRENNA

November 13, 1911 - January 6, 2011

He was born on his father's farm south of Hesper, Iowa on November 13, 1911, the only son of Edward and Mathilda (Usgaard) Brenna. He attended a country school in rural Iowa and graduated from Mabel High School in 1931.

In addition to farming on the Brenna family farm south of Mabel, he worked as an insurance agent, Director and Vice-President for Preble Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Company from 1958 until retiring in 1991. In later years, he worked at Green Lea Manor. Leonard was a faithful member of Mabel First Lutheran Church. He carried the American Flag in a procession from the old Norwegian Church building to the present building as part of the dedication service in 1926. He was also active in the Lions Club in Mabel. He enjoyed wood working and became quiet adept at caning chairs.

Leonard passed away Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minnesota at the age of 99.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Clarissa Ostern Brenna, a son, John Brenna and his wife, Alison of Rochester, Minnesota, a daughter, Rita Bergsrud and her husband, Gilbert of West Bloomfield, Michigan, a daughter, Karen Whitmer and her husband, Lewis of Waynesboro, Virginia, a son-in-law, Robert Sikkink, of Austin, Minnesota, a sister, Anita Kittleson of Mabel, Minnesota, a sister, Edna Dahl and her husband, Ronald of Mohall, North Dakota, fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Luella Hellikson and Clara LeSage, his daughter, Meredith Sikkink and an infant daughter.

A funeral service will be held at Mabel First Lutheran Church on Monday, January 10 at 2 PM. There will be a visitation at the Mengis Funeral Home on Sunday, January 9, from 4 PM until 6 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mabel First Lutheran Church.
