BERNER "BARNEY" DAHL

July 12, 1919 - October 21, 2010

Berner was born July 12, 1919 in rural Hesper, Iowa the son of Bert and Caroline (Stenkjaer) Dahl, both immigrants from Leksvik, Norway.  He was baptized and confirmed in the Hesper Lutheran Church and  attended the Rotvold School in Hesper Township, Winneshiek County Iowa.

He married Marion Welch on September 30th, 1941.  They later divorced in 1955.  He farmed one year on the Anderson place south of Hesper, now the Leslie Folstad Farm.  Barney as he liked to be called worked as a mechanic in Mabel and in the surrounding area, in his later years worked on several area farms.  When he was younger he was an avid small game hunter.

He had been living at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home for some time and during his early years there, was involved with all their activities and kept himself informed of current events.  He also enjoyed listening to country western music.

 Barney passed away Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home at the age of 91.      

Barney is survived by a daughter Sharon Vick of Mabel; two sons Barry (Susan) of Rochester, and Dennis (Julie) of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren Tony (Melissa) Vick of Caledonia, Minn., Tlisa (Gary) Schaefer of Leroy, Minn., Tim (Jeanie) Vick of Sparta, Wisc., Mark (Donna) Vick of Copperas Cove, Texas, Matthew (Brigid) Dahl of St. Paul, Minn., and Rhonda (Jose) Niola of Minneapolis, Minn.; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers Arnold (Violet) of Waterloo, Iowa, and Maurice (Avon) of Hesper, Iowa.  He was preceded in death by three brothers Melvin, Sverre, and Hildus; a sister Helen (Mrs. Harold) Selness; and a granddaughter Mary Dahl.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating.   Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be 4 – 6 PM Sunday, October 24 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
