Mark was born July 13, 1953 in Harmony, Minnesota to Richard and Genevieve (Olson) Haakenstad. He grew up in the Lenora area and graduated from the Mabel-Canton High School in 1971. He worked several jobs over the years including well drilling in Florida, oil drilling in Oklahoma, planting trees, concrete work, carpentering, and most recently worked for Farmers Coop in Spring Grove spraying crops. He married Linda Nerstad, but they later divorced. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, antique tractors, and motorcycles.
Mark passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2010 in Minneapolis of complications from burns he received in December at the age of 56.
Mark is survived by his two children Carl of Decorah, Iowa, and Hannah of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his mother Genevieve of Mabel; and seven brothers and sisters Larry (Jessica) of Shakopee, Minnesota, Joan Slater of Faribault, Minnesota, Lynn (Marilyn) of Canton, Minnesota, Rachel Knott of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, Lance of Minneapolis, Joyce of Rochester, and Craig of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his father Richard.
Memorial services will be 1 PM Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with Rev. Gail Klavetter officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting the family with arrangements.
