Cora was born October 6, 1921 to Ole and Clara (Larson) Thompson in the “Big Woods” area of Preble Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota. She attended the Newburg School. Cora married Floyd Newton, but they were later divorced. On June 25, 1956 she married Milton L. Gerard in Harmony. They
resided in Newburg where Milton operated a sawmill and lumberyard. Milton
passed away May 5, 2008. She was a member of the Newburg United Methodist Church and enjoyed being with family, visiting with friends, gardening, quilting, cooking and canning.
Cora passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel at the age of 87.
Cora is survived by six children David Newton of Mabel, Ann (Tom) Emery of Caledonia, Minn., and Carol (Rodney) Thompson of Mabel, Pauline Vigeland of Canton, Elaine Johnson of Mabel, and Tony (Shelly) of Canton; Eleven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Milton; her parents; a brother Theodore Thompson; two sisters Delia Sommer and Esther Knudson; and son-in-law David Johnson.
Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Newburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Burton Hoag officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 pm Thursday, April 23 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church. |
