DARRELL W. VINE

July 9, 1936 - March 5, 2009

Darrell was born July 9, 1936 in Winneshiek County, Iowa to Theodore and Myrtle (Sharp) Vine.  In 1942 he was baptized at the Decorah Methodist Church. He attended the Canoe Number 2 country school in rural Decorah and then graduated from the Canton High School in 1954. From 1954 to 1956 he served in the United States Army.   On October 12, 1958 he was united in marriage to Vivian Lovstuen at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church.  Darrell and Vivian started their married life in Mabel, then moved to Prosper, and in 1963 moved to a farm outside of Canton.  They had four daughters Carrie, Connie, Brenda, and Diane.  In 1996 they returned to Mabel.
 Darrell worked for Bell Telephone in Winona, Prosper Lumber, Nelson Brothers Construction, and also started his own construction company, Vine Builders.  Darrell continued with his carpentry, often working with his brother Alvin, until he became ill last fall.  He was a member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church, served on the Church Council, on the Mabel-Canton School Board, and volunteered for 5 years on the Mabel Ambulance Service.
Darrell passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa at the age of 72.
Darrell is survived by his wife Vivian; three daughters Carrie (David) Swenson of Mabel, Brenda (Dan) Tollefson of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Diane (Don) Tollefsrud of Canton and son-in-law Michael Wilson, Cresco, IA.  Darrell is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Matthew (Tina) Swenson, Sarah Swenson (fiancé Mike Dawley) , Kristine Swenson, Megan (Shawn) Merkel, Leigh Wilson (special friend Dustin Myer), Ross Wilson, Samantha Tollefson, Theodore Tollefson, Tracer Tollefsrud, and Colton Tollefsrud; and a great grandson Shawn Swenson; five brothers Harlan (Joann), Decorah, Carlton (Mavis) St. Cloud, FL, Eldon (Kathy) Clear Lake, IA, Alvin (Donna) Decorah, and Robert (Ruby) Blaine, MN;  mother-in-law Velva Lovstuen, Mabel; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his daughter Connie Wilson; parents Theodore and Myrtle Vine; father-in-law Alert Lovstuen; sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Durwin Kallevang;  nephew James Vine; and  niece Peggy Vine.

Memorial services will be 11 AM Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel with the Rev. Gail Klavetter officiating. Military rites by the Canton American Legion.  Burial will be in the Russell Cemetery.  Visitation will be 4 – 8 PM Monday, March 9th at the Mabel First Lutheran Church  and one hour prior to services.
