GAYLORD M. NARUM

June 9, 1934 - February 13, 2009

Gaylord was born June 9, 1934 in Winneshiek County, Iowa to Alfred and Clara (Housker) Narum.  He was confirmed at the Garness Trinity Lutheran Church.  During high school he contracted polio and spent a year in the hospital.   He graduated from the Mabel High School in 1954 where he played basketball. He attended  Winona State College.  In 1964 he married Juanita Williams.  They later divorced.  On May 27, 1989 he married Judy Nordeen.  Gaylord hauled milk for several years then was an owner in “Modern Plumbing” in Mabel before working as a plumber at the St. Francis Hospital in LaCrosse.  For several years he drove truck for Roverud Construction in Spring Grove.  After retiring he drove school bus #96 for the Mabel-Canton School District.  Gaylord was active in the Mabel community and served on the city council, the Mabel Cooperative Telephone board, and was on the Mabel Fire Dept. where he had also served as the chief.  He was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church, and formerly of the Lions, and he enjoyed woodworking, golfing, sports, camping, fishing, and had previously sang for many weddings and with the Luren Singers in Decorah.

Gaylord passed away Friday, February 13, 2009 at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota at the age of  74.

Gaylord is survived by his wife Judy of Mabel; children Jay (Misty) of Longmont, Colorado, and Garth (Diane) of  Decorah, Iowa; Scott Miles of St. Michael, Minn., Kevin Miles of Mabel, Becky Coulter of Monticello, Minn., and Tammy Miles of Prior Lake, Minn.; eleven  grandchildren Jazmine, Kaylene, Samantha, Jacob, and Joshua Keaton, Samantha, Ben, Jessica, Christopher, and Courtney; three great grandchildren Austin, Phoenix, and Kaylee; a sister Avis Kissinger of Harmony, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Roxanne; his first wife Juanita;  a sister Borghild Rollins; and a brother Lyle.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Public Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 8 PM Monday, February 16 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.
