Gary was born December 9, 1945 in Decorah, Iowa to Julius and Bernice (Julius) Sjarpe. He attended the Grubtown Country School, rural Lanesboro, for eight years and then the Lanesboro High School graduating in 1960. On July 7, 1961 he married Carol Berning of Harmony, Minnesota. He farmed and had also worked at IBM for seven years. He was a member of the Elstad Lutheran Church and enjoyed reading and watching car races. Gary passed away Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, Minnesota at the age of 66. Gary is survived by his wife Carol; two sons Kenneth of Seattle, Washington and Rick (Sandy) of Lanesboro; two grandsons Brandon of Lanesboro and Daniel of Grand Forks, North Dakota; and a brother Norman (Beatrice) of Stewartville, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Friday, January 23 at the Elstad Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro, Minnesota with the Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. The Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel is assisting the family with arrangements.
