LAURENCE EDWARD “MIKE” CALDWELL

August 7, 1928 - May 5, 2008

Mike was born on August 7, 1928 to Philip and Bertha “Bert” (Pedersen) in Hudson, Wisconsin. Mike joined the Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War. On November 4, 1951 he was united into marriage with Lucretia "Luke" Stansbury. He farmed in the Canton area from 1955 until 1982 when he and Luke moved to Decorah. He then worked at the Haymarket for a number of years. Mike enjoyed fishing, playing cards, planting potatoes, jigsaw puzzles, watching old TV shows, being with grandchildren, and having coffee with Luke. He was a member of the Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church, Canton American Legion Post 400, Decorah VFW, and the Masonic Lodge.

Mike passed away on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the age of 79 at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Mike will be missed by his children, Mike (Nancy), David (Lynn), Grant, and Kate Kjome; grandchildren, Megan (Shaun) Hansen, Amy Kjome, Jyll Kjome, and Laurence Caldwell; siblings, Pat (Mary), Charlotte Nicholson, Dick (Jo), Dave (Ruth), Shirley Hegtvedt, and Frank (Joanne); and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mike is preceded in death by his wife, Lucretia; and an infant sister Mary Jane.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 10, 2008 at 11am at the Mengis Funeral Home, 301 N Maple, Mabel. A fellowship will be held at the family farm in Canton immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in memory of his wife Lucretia
