LaVern Joseph Schissel

June 26, 1933 - February 18, 2008

LaVern Joseph Schissel was born on June 26, 1933 in Ossian, Iowa, the son of Ludwig and Cecilia (Timp) Schissel.  He was the second born of four children.  LaVern was a student at DeSales Catholic School in Ossian.  He served two years in the Army, including a tour in Korea, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He married Anita Dickhans on August 6, 1956 at the St. Johns Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. He and Anita began dairy farming in rural Ossian before moving to the Mabel, Minnesota area in April of 1962.  They purchased a farm three miles west of Mabel and grew his farming operation throughout the years with hard work and dedication, until he began a semi-retirement in 1998.  He continued to work part-time in the field for area farmers.  His passion was always farming, working with cattle, and being a good steward of the land.  He enjoyed visiting with people, going to dances, and spending time with his family.

LaVern and Anita enjoyed being members of the Skyliners Polka Club for several years, and traveled with many good friends.  He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, Minn. where he served on the parish Finance Committee.  He will be remembered by many for his sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh.

LaVern passed away unexpectedly Monday, February 18, 2008 at his home following a sudden illness at the age of 74.

LaVern is survived by his wife, Anita, of 51 years, and one daughter, Jacque
(Rob) Hahn of Cresco, Iowa and two grandchildren Katie (Jeff) Hackman of Rochester and Ryan Hahn of New York City, New York.

He is also survived by one brother, Larry (Kathy) of Olathe, Kansas; one brother-in-law Merle (Sue) Dickhans; two sister-in-laws Bernice (Art) Pavlovec and Sharon (Schissel) Letts; nephews Brian (Jane) Schissel, Mark

LaVern was preceded in death by his parents, Ludwig and Cecilia Schissel; his mother and father in-law Ed and Mary Dickhans; older sister Arlene Schissel at birth; a younger brother Duane Schissel; and twin grandsons Mitchell and Michael Hahn.

He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and his dogs Petey and Penny.
