Florian was born February 18, 1930 in St. Lucas, Iowa to Victor and Clara
(Vorderbrueck) Schmitt. He attended school in St. Lucas and then enlisted for four years in the United States Air Force and served in Taegu, Korea.
In 1955 he moved to the Mabel, Minnesota area where he started farming. On October 20, 1956 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Ann Bruess at the St.
Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, Iowa. They operated a dairy and beef farm until retiring in 1998. Florian enjoyed working with his Angus beef cows, and advocated the use of strip farming and soil conservation. He was a member of the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, Minnesota and the Mabel American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, gardening, woodworking, and reading about history.
Florian passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 3, 2008 at his home at the age of 77.
Florian is survived by his wife Dorothy Ann of Mabel; six children Kathy
(Larry) Howard of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Janet (Jim) Ulrich of Grays Lake, Illinois, Patsy (Dan) Sebben of Dubuque, Iowa, David (Chie) of Troy, Ohio, Robert of Bangkok, Thailand, and Larry (Jennifer) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; ten grandchildren Jeffrey, Julie, Joy, Tommy, Annie, Rachel, Susie, Christopher, Matthew, and Nathan; two great grandchildren Alex and Jacob; and a sister Clementine Kinkor of Calmar, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son Gary.
Funeral Mass will be 1 PM Thursday, February 7, 2008 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Canton, Minnesota with Father Donald P. Schmitz officiating. Military rites by the Mabel American Legion. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Waucoma, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church
